These states allow you to tap into your inner wisdom, where you can release stress, heal emotional wounds, and align with your goals. Research, such as studies on sound therapy and mindfulness, shows that vibrational frequencies from chanting or toning can lower cortisol levels, enhance brainwave coherence, and promote emotional well-being.
Sound acts as a bridge to these states because it’s more than just noise—it’s energy. Every vibration you create with your voice carries an intention that ripples through your body and mind, aligning your energy with your deepest desires. And, vocalizing sound requires breath and focus, anchoring you in the present moment—a key to entering altered states.
Sound can unlock stored emotions, allowing you to process and release them, fostering healing. When paired with a clear intention (e.g., “I am at peace”), sound strengthens your focus, aligning your energy with your goals.
A few years ago, I faced a period of overwhelming stress and I felt disconnected from my purpose. On a roadtrip to Vermont, I happened to visit a store that specialized in crystals and stones (some of my favorite things to collect). While in the store, I noticed some colorful bowls and began to play with them, creating beautiful tones with a rubber mallet. Immediately, I felt my body relax, and my mind quieted. I focused on the intention, “I am calm and centered.” The vibrations seemed to dissolve my tension, and in that altered state, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. Over weeks of practicing toning at home, I noticed a shift—I was sleeping better, feeling more creative, and making decisions with clarity. Sound became a gateway to healing and realigning with my best self.
It was about this time that I noticed, by chance, that I was toning while singing a song I play frequently in my car on roadtrips. Singing this song, loudly and with complete abandon, created a calming energy as well. I’m not sure if this in intentional, but the song “Take Me Home Country Roads” by John Denver is perfect for comfortably making long vowel tones that seem to resonate with my entire being. One in particular is the “Om” sound, which happens naturally, and for an appropriate duration, every time the word “home” is sung. Give it a try…you might be pleasantly surprised. It will lift spirits in a heartbeat.

Healing and transformation can be immediate, or can take some time. Trust small shifts, like feeling calmer, as signs of progress.
